Asking For A Letter of Recommendation
If you have worked with Dr. Bottoms as a research assistant, had her as an instructor, or otherwise worked with her, you may request that she write a letter of recommendation. If she does not know you, she cannot write you a letter of recommendation.
If you would like to request a letter of recommendation from Dr. Bottoms, first email her to ask her if she is willing to write a letter for you. Be sure to remind her what class you have taken with her or when you were in her research lab and to state the purpose of the letter. If she agrees (and she probably will!), provide her with the following:
-
An unofficial transcript
-
A resume and/or detailed listing of any positive points and accomplishments that she can mention
-
Your personal statement (you should send this to her ahead of time so that she can comment on it and help you improve it!)
-
Any necessary forms, with as many parts filled out as you can, including her address.
-
If the letter should be submitted electronically, make sure she gets the link from the school. If the letter needs to be mailed, give her an unstamped envelope addressed to the school. Put on the envelope her return address and title. The return address should appear as follows:
-
Professor Bette L. Bottoms
-
University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Psychology (MC 285)
-
1007 W. Harrison Street
-
Chicago, IL 60607-7137
-
-
If you worked in her research lab: A statement saying exactly what you did in the lab, what you learned, and exactly when you worked in the lab. Also be sure to include which graduate student you primarily worked with so that she can add her own comments about you.
-
Due dates for everything
Please send all of this information to her at one time -- by email is best (bbottoms@uic.edu), or to her mailbox in the Psychology Department (MC 285). If you have any questions or concerns, please email Dr. Bottoms.
Out of consideration for Dr. Bottoms' time and the quality of your letter, please submit your request for a letter of recommendation AT LEAST three (3) weeks in advance of the due date.
